A question that I get asked a lot is how to kill bed bugs in your mattress. A mattress is a favorite hiding places for these bugs. This makes this question important.
Bed Bugs like to be close to their dinner – you. And they also want a place where they can hide during daylight. They also want a place to hide during any attempts that you might make to get rid of them. Burrowing deep into a mattress is a perfect solution for them.
You could toss you mattress but that is an expensive solution. The fact is any new mattress you get will get infested as soon as you bring it into your home. You have to kill the entire infestation.
How To Detect Bed Bugs In Bed
One important thing you need to make sure of before you start is what type of bug is in your bed. You probably already suspect these bugs if you are finding bites that are itchy and red after you get up in the morning.
But the best way is to search for them. Pull back the sheets and take a look along the seams of your mattress. If you have an infestation you’ll find discarded shells and small dark fecal marks. You might even see a bug or two quickly crawling away to hide again. Bed Bug Pictures
Pull the mattress and springs up and check along the bed frame while you are looking.
How to Kill Bed Bugs in Your Mattress
A mattress has too much mass to be able to treat very easily. So unless you want to buy a new one, it is important to learn how to kill bed bugs in your mattress.
If you spray or fog the bugs will just crawl inside to hide. There is also the problem with putting toxic chemicals on your bed.
Heating and cold might work better but in order to work they have to be consistent. They also require longer periods of time to be effective and get into the inside the mattress. This is something that you are not going to be able to do at home.
So What Can You Do?
Luckily there is an effective and safe alternative that you can use. It’s a SafeRest Mattress Encasements. These special covers differ from normal mattress covers in that they tightly seal in a mattress or box springs This makes it impossible for the bugs to escape or to get at you.
To use one you must first treat the frame and any head or baseboards. You can find the sprays that you can use for this at the same link above. Then carefully so you don’t rip the cover, put the cover over the mattress and box spring sealing the bugs inside. If you happen to rip a cover don’t fret. Just use a bit of duct tape to seal it back up.
When you get the SafeRest Mattress Encasements make sure that you also get the bed risers. These are slick plastic risers that will raise your bed off the floor. The slick surfaces make it impossible for the bugs to get up to you.
When you remake your bed make sure that there are no blankets trailing to the floor. If possible place the bed a couple of feet from the wall. Wash sheets and pillows in hot water and dry in hot heat. Get a few covers for your pillows and you have instant relief from the bugs.
Now this won’t cure all your problems but it is a great first step. You can get my book How To Kill Bed Bugs at this link that will give you all the exact steps that you need to get rid of these nasty bugs.
