It’s sort of surprising but a question often asked is do bed bugs smell? The answer is yes they do, which is sort of surprising considering how small they are.
But like many other species of bugs, they emit odors called alarm pheromones. When you come into a room with a large infestation you might get a whiff of their smell.
Bedbugs smell sort of sweet, like coriander. Many people describe it as similar to a stink bugs odor. The smell has also been described as akin to wet moldy clothes or the smell of sweaty shoes.
The smell is stronger when a bug is crushed. Also, the larger the infestation the stronger the smell.

What Is The First Sign Of Bed Bugs
There are two species of Bed Bugs that feed on warm blooded mammals like us. The first sign that you are getting an infestation of BedBugs is probably going to be the bites they leave behind after they feed.
Often the bites will be in a row as the bugs follow a blood vein. The bites can be small itchy red welts on exposed skin that will usually happen in the early hours of the morning while you sleep. Bed Bug Bites
Another sign can be finding small blood smears on your mattress and sheets. These happen when you move around during the night while the bugs are feeding, crushing them. When you look closely at the corners and seams of your sheets and mattress you’ll likely see blood smears, eggs, or fecal droppings.
If an infestation is large enough you might even see the bugs out in the open.
What Do Bed Bugs Look Like
Bed Bugs are a small, oval-shaped bug about the size of an apple seed. They hatch from eggs laid by the female bug. These eggs then take 7 to 10 days to hatch, depending upon the temperature.
Each female can lay as many as a dozen eggs a day and hundreds of eggs over their lifetime.
Once they hatch, a newborn bug called a nymph goes through several molting stages as they grow into adults. Molting is when they shed their old shell and grow into a new larger one. One of the signs of an infestation is these discarded shells.
Bed Bugs tend to cluster together in the same areas.
Bed Bug Bites
The bites from these bugs aren’t dangerous but can be extremely annoying. Most bedbug bites are painless at first. Later they can turn into itchy welts. The bites are on any area of skin exposed while sleeping.
How irritating a bite can be is different from person to person. For some, they can be almost unnoticeable. For others, the small bites turn into welts that become extremely itchy. Treating Bed Bug Bites
According to the CDC a bite can take as long as 14 days or as little as a couple of hours for a bite to become visible. It also takes about 2 to 5 minutes for a bug to feed.
An individual bite irritation will usually last for a couple of days. But when you are getting new bites every night from a large infestation this can be a major problem.
How Do Bed Bugs Smell Humans
A Bed Bug looking to feed finds us through smell. The CO2, warmth and moisture from your body can lure these bloodthirsty pests to your bedside. They can smell us from 3ft or more away. Farther than that and they search in random patterns to find their next meal.
Once they find a blood source they will cluster nearby. They usually feed in the early hours of the morning when we are in our deepest sleep and not moving.
